HENRIQUE PINTO

  Born in São Paulo (Brazil) on September 8, 1941.

  His musical studies started with Sérgio Scarpiello in São Paulo. He also studied with Manoel São Marcos, Isaias Sávio, Carlos Barbosa Lima, José Tomás (Santiago de Compostela - Spain) and Abel Carlevaro (Uruguay). He also took courses on harmony, counterpoint, musical analysis and interpretation with Guido Santorsola and Mario Ficarelli.

  Early in his career Henrique Pinto built up a reputation as a commited and sensitive teacher. People from all over Brazil come to São Paulo in order to benefit from his experience and many of his students have progressed to national and international careers as concert performers and occupied important positions as teachers themselves. He has published a series of didactic works for Ricordi Brasileira which are now part of the early training of thousands of students in his country. His book "Cirandinha" was republished in Italy and it has been used at music schools in several European countries.

  Henrique Pinto´s activities as a teacher have been quite intense, having taught at the Arts Foundation in São Caetano and at the Brooklin Paulista Conservatory in São Paulo. Upon receiving the title of "acknowledged excellence" from the Ministery of Education for his activities as a teacher, soloist and chamber player, he created the guitar course and started teaching at universities like Instituto Normal de Música, Mozarteum College and São Judas Tadeu University in São Paulo. Today he teaches at FAAM-FMU, São Paulo City School of Music and also privately.

  He has been invited to teach at innumerous Summer courses all over Brazil, like Porto Alegre, Montenegro, Vale Veneto, Caxias do Sul, Londrina, Iguazu Falls, Joinville, Brusque and Florianópolis in the South; Campo Grande, Pouso Alegre, Varginha, Juiz de Fora, Vitória, Goiânia, Brasília, Rio de Janeiro and Campos de Jordão in Central Brazil; Salvador, João Pessoa, Fortaleza, Palmas and Belém in the North and Amazonic states. Outside of Brazil he has also taught at Medellín (Colombia); Cochabamba and La Paz (Bolivia); Santo Tirso and Aveiro (Portugal) and Koblenz (Germany).

  As a performer, he is a member of guitar and cello duo Violãocellando with cellist Gretchen Miller and of guitar trio Violão-Camara-Trio, with whom he recorded in 1989 an LP that was received by the press as "one of the best records of instrumental music of the year". In its present formation with João Luís Rezende and Ivan Claus they have just released their first CD.

  His efforts to promote the classical guitar extend beyond teaching and performing. He has organized seminars of guitar technique and interpretation at Mozarteum College, Brooklin Paulista Conservatory and Souza Lima Conservatory, where he also organizes an yearly national guitar contest. He has been a member-president of examining boards for selection of college guitar teachers. For many years he has coordinated a season of guitar concerts, Guitar-Project at MASP (São Paulo Museum of Art) which has brought before the public a great number of talented young performers.

  He has written many articles for the magazine Cover Guitarra (Brazil) and Guitarreando (Portugal) and at the moment he writes regularly for Guitar Player of Brazil and Violão Intercâmbio.

  He is a member of the São Paulo Academy of Music, occupying the chair that once belonged to Isaias Sávio. He is also a member of the Council of the Academy of Guitar of the city of Koblenz (Germany).
